人是我們稱之為「宇宙」的一個整體的一部分，在時間和空間上都有限的一部分。對自我、思維和感情的體驗都與世界的其他部分分割開來。這是一種意識的視覺錯覺。這種錯覺有如一種牢籠，使我們局限於個人的慾望，只對和我們最親近的人才懷有溫情。我們的任務應是擴大同情心，去擁抱所有的生命和自然界中美好的一切，把自己從這個牢籠中解放出來。

A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
